Federal President Köhler becomes patron of the FIFA World Cup

Federal President Horst Köhler becomes patron of the FIFA World Cup 2006. This was confirmed on Thursday in Berlin at a meeting of the Federal President with Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder, President of the German Football Association (DFB), Theo Zwanziger, Acting President of the DFB and Horst R. Schmidt, vice-president of the Organising Committee.
"We consider it a great honour that the Federal President will become patron of the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The fact that the most important representative of our country is playing a personal role in this, emphasises the significance of this unique event", says Franz Beckenbauer, president of the Organising Committee.
The Federal President has also promised to attend the Final Draw, which will take place on 9 December 2005 in Leipzig.
