Tuesday, July 4, 2006
At the end of a dramatic tie, Germany went down 2-0 to Italy in the last minute of extra-time. Even so, the crowd gave Jürgen Klinsmann's team a standing ovation for a great performance.
Germany left the pitch to the sound of the English football anthem "You'll never walk alone". In the last minute of extra time they finally succumbed to an attacking Italian side. Germany's youngest team since 1966 will have the chance to claim third place in Stuttgart on Saturday.
Fabio Grosso (119 mins) and Alessandro del Piero (120 mins) scored the 'Azzuri's' two goals that ended the German World Cup dream and put Italy into their sixth Final. They will face France in Berlin on Sunday.
At the end of the match Chancellor Angela Merkel and Federal President Horst Köhler went to see the German team in their dressing-room and thanked them for their fantastic performances throughout the World Cup. Interior Minister Wolfgang Schäuble congratulated Italy for reaching the World Cup Final. Schäuble said both teams had produced a great game but, the luckier team had won in the end.
